This month we are going to be looking at one of our favourite towns in Phuket (after Naithon of course!) Surin. We have written before about Surin Beach with its legendary white sparkling sand, beautiful clear seas, water sports enthusiasts and its general aura of exclusivity, yet there is so much more available within the local town and nearby villages. Located on the west coast of Phuket it is approximately 25 minutes from Naithon beach bungalows Phuket and about 20 minutes away from Phuket airport.
Once a small fishing village Surin is now home to the appropriately named ‘millionaire’s row’ thanks to its luxurious beach bungalows, luxury real estate and high end Phuket living! Within Surin itself are many cultural sights. The City Pillar Shrine is located near the city hall; in 1968 a golden cassia log was donated and carved and has been in situ ever since. This monument has become symbolic of Surin and is the place to go for a souvenir photo! There is also the Surin National Museum, telling the history of the town and its important positioning within Phuket.
A short distance out of Surin are the silk weaving villages; Ban Khawao Sinnarin, Ban Chok and Ban Sado. They are all within a close driving distance and deal in a trade of silk products and silverware, which are sold to shops and visitors. Although these villages have become more ‘touristy’ over the years it is still a great opportunity to learn more about traditional trade and goods in Phuket, traditional handicrafts and a chance to pick up the perfect souvenir for your Naithon beach bungalow! All in all Surin is a great day out that offers something for everyone!
