Koh Rang Yai island is situated about 5km off the east coast of Phuket, approximately 20 minute boat ride from Laem Hin Pier (passing Koh Maphrao on the way) and in its turn around 25 minutes drive to reach Laem Hin Pier from your Phuket private pool villa.
Koh Rang Yai is uninhabited but has a restaurant, bar and a few small beach bungalows for visitors to the north of the beach. The beach itself is the main draw to the island, it is 1km long beach and usually gets busy in the afternoon with tourists on their way back from Phang Nga Bay.
Water sports are a huge draw for many people as the west facing beach creates the ideal conditions for many activities, there are opportunities to rent kayaks and go snorkeling as well as more adventurous undertakings! Koh Rang Yai coast also has an unusual but happy abnormality – the southward current gently carries you parallel to the whole length of the beach and the water is almost at body temperature, a great way to spend a leisurely afternoon!
Further away from the beach there are more land based activities, a small football pitch, an air-gun shooting range and even a mini-golf course, and there are the options to go hiking or cycling though the tree lined scenery. The main business on the island, and perhaps its only non-leisure base is the pearl farm. It possible to book on guided tours and talks regarding the cultivation of pearls and of course a chance to pick up some beautiful souvenirs.
Koh Rang Yai is a great day out and easily reached from the luxury of your Phuket private pool villa!
